History of Feng Shui Feng Shui was first practiced during the West Han dynasty in China around 3000 BC. Its earliest forms relied on using the stars to find connections between the universe and humans. The doors of homes were aligned with certain stars in winter to improve the moods and luck of the people inside. Feng Shui evolved from being used in the construction of single houses into changing how entire cities were built. Ancient Chinese cities were designed in concentric rectangles. The city was lined with walls and surrounded by gardens, parks and courtyards. The Chinese sought to balance both the manmade and the natural to increase the positive energy of the city. Almost every ancient Chinese building was constructed according to Feng Shui. The construction relied on the concept of Yin and Yang. The left side of any building represented the Yang, the male force. It was connected to the heavens. The right side of any building represented the Yin, the female force. It was connected to Earth energies. Areas that were lit by the sun and elevated in the front were associated with the Yang. Areas that were empty, covered by shadows or elevated in the back were associated with the Yin. Any buildings that were constructed had to perfectly balance both the Yin and the Yang. If it was not balanced, the building was considered out of harmony. What You Should Know About Feng Shui One of the most important terms associated with Feng Shui is bagua. Bagua is the map that is used to evaluate the Feng Shui of every work or living space. The map is shaped like an octagon and divided into nine areas. Each of the nine areas represents a different part of life. The nine areas are: Career Travel Creativity Skills and knowledge Health Family Relationships and love Reputation Prosperity Each part of the map helps you position your living or work space so it is properly balanced. Each of the nine areas must be in perfect harmony with the others. The application of the bagua is made easier because each of the areas is represented by a color. You need to balance each of the colors within your home. In addition, every part of life is associated with a specific element that must be added to your home. For example, career is associated with metal. You must have something metal in your house to maintain the proper harmony. Another important term associated with Feng Shui is chi. Chi is the energy that is constantly changing and moving around us. It is an invisible force within every object in our environment. You should study the movement of chi to get a better understanding of the world around you and to help you balance your life.
